Release Date: 2011-11-07

Bulgaria’s Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has finally given a positive environmental assessment of the Bulgarian part of the Burgas - Alexandroupolis oil pipeline. The operator of the project – the consortium Trans-Balkan Pipeline BV - can start counseling with the authorities of those municipalities whose territory will be crossed by the pipeline.

In 2007 Russia, Bulgaria and Greece signed an intergovernmental agreement to build a nearly 300-kilometer long pipeline. The project cost is estimated at 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, and the pipeline capacity is projected at 35 million tons per year with possible extension up to 50 million tons, and will run from the Burgas port on the Black Sea to the port of Alexandroupolis on the Aegean Sea. Russia will own 51.7% shares in the consortium to manage the pipeline, Bulgaria and Greece both 24.15%.
