Russia Studying Chances of Returning Russia Oil Companies to Libya

Release Date: 2011-09-05

The Russian Energy Ministry is studying the possibility of holding negotiations with the new representatives of Libya on the return of Russian companies to the North African country in Libyan oil fields, Russian Energy Minister Sergey Shmatko said.

Before the armed conflict erupted in Libya, Gazprom and Tatneft worked in the country.

"Of course we will ask about what is going to happen to those projects which involved Russian companies and about the prospects overall in the Libyan market in cooperation with the new government", Shmatko said during an interview on the Russian television station Rossiya 24.

Shmatko stressed that Russia would defend its interests in Libya. "Depending on what we hear, we will develop new ways of protecting protecting our interests", he said.
