Moscow, January 20 – Mechel (NYSE: MTL), the leading Russian mining and metallurgical company, announces operational results of 2010.Yevgeny V. Mikhel, CEO of Mechel, comments on the results of 2010: "Mechel Group's operation results show that in 2010 we hit higher than the pre-crisis level (2008).
In the mining segment, coal production increase for metallurgy is 176% over 2010.
In the steel segment, the volume of metalware has reached an unprecedented level. In 2010, Mechel added a new asset to its steel segment - Laminorul Braila, a Romanian manufacturer of rolled section, and continued modernization of Mechel's existing facilities. The result is an 11% increase of steel production, a 35% increase of metalware production and a 16% increase of rolled products against 2009.
Production of ferroalloys - nickel and ferrosilicium - has also increased against 2009.
In the energy segment, 2010 marks good prospects of development. We see stable growth of production and expect further development powered by the liberalization of the Russian electricity market as of January 2011. In the framework of developing the energy segment, Mechel became a 100% owner of Toplofikazia Ruse AD power plant (Bulgaria). This opens new horizons for sales of electricity on the European market".
