Russia to build a NPP and research reactor in Venezuela, 俄罗斯国营核能公司Rosatom

An interstate agreement between Russia and Venezuela concerning cooperation in the development of nuclear power of Venezuela and construction and operation of a NPP and research reactor in the country was signed on October 15 in Moscow in witness of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
The agreement was signed by Sergey Kirienko, the Director General of SC Rosatom, and Nicolas Maduro, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela.

The agreement provides for not only turn-key construction of a two-unit NPP (capacity of each reactor is 1,200 MW) to the Russian technology but also a research reactor for production of radioisotopes for application in medicine, agriculture and other sectors of economy.

According to the document, the parties also plan to cooperate in creating an infrastructure which is necessary for a transition to the active phase of construction of the NPP research reactor in Venezuela.

The Russian-Venezuelan cooperation in the field of the peaceful use of atomic energy is regulated by the intergovernmental agreement concerning the peaceful use of atomic energy signed on November 26, 2008.
