富腾与TGC-1共庆合作50周年, 富腾公司

Release Date: 2010-06-29

Today in Svetogorsk and Imatra, Fortum and TGC-1 are celebrating half a century of collaboration. Fortum’s President and CEO Tapio Kuula is praising the long-lasting smooth collaboration in electricity imports, production and other energy-related activities.

The first discussions about importing electricity from Russia to Finland were held 50 years ago. Under an agreement signed in 1960 by Imatran Voima, Enso-Gutzeit and Mashinoexport, Lenenergo started delivering electricity to Finland using the 110-kV power line between the Svetogorsk and Imatra hydropower plants. To accommodate the electricity deliveries, one of the Svetogorsk plant’s 25-MW equipment was connected in parallel to Finland’s grid, and electricity delivery began with an output of 22 MW. Imatran Voima and Lenenergo were responsible for the practical implementation of the electricity transfer agreements.

Over these 50 years, transfer capacity between Russia and Finland has increased to 1,300 MW. Annual imports are currently approximately 10 TWh, from which Fortum’s share is about 3 TWh. To date, a total of 120 TWh of electricity has been imported from Russia to Finland. Of this, approximately 80 TWh's has been produced at TGC-1's power plants. The collaboration has expanded from electricity imports to other areas as well. In the late 1990s, Fortum acquired a share of Lenenergo. In conjunction with Russian electricity sector reform, Lenenergo’s production was separated from other functions in 2006, and Fortum acquired a share of the territorial generating company TGC-1, which supplies electricity and heat to the St. Petersburg, Karelia and Kola regions. Today Fortum is the second-largest owner of TGC-1, with a shareholding of just over 25%. Fortum and TGC-1’s joint projects have included power plant operations and maintenance, among other things.

”Despite changes, our relationship and collaboration has always remained good and has even become closer over the years. The straightforward way of doing business on both sides of the border has enabled this positive development”, notes Fortum’s President and CEO Tapio Kuula.
