Dmitry Medvedev, President of Russia, and Jens Stoltenberg, Prime Minister of Norway, have reached a preliminary agreement for sea shelf delimitation and fostering further cooperation of Russia and Norway in the Barents Sea and the Arctic OceanA corresponding announcement was signed by the Foreign Ministers of Russia and Norway. As Medvedev stressed at the final press conference, the state agreement for sea shelf delimitation would foster the development of joint projects between Russia and Norway, particularly in energy and economy. As Medvedev noted, Russia is also interested in the cooperation with Norway in the Arctic shelf. Some of the prospective areas of cooperation that Medvedev named include oil and gas, shipbuilding, marine equipment, IT and telecommunications.
Delegations of both countries are planning to continue the talks with the view of preparing the final agreement.
A day before, on April 26, Medvedev and Dag Terje Andersen, President of the Norwegian Storting (Parliament), discussed the prospects for developing inter-parliamentary contacts. The Russian President supports the intensification of these relations, including via the participation of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions. The meeting was attended by the governors of these Russian regions.
The President of Russia and President of Norway's parliament expressed their desire to develop contacts within inter-parliamentary structures where Russia and Norway currently cooperate actively, including the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Arctic Council, and Council of the Baltic Sea States.
