The State Duma Committee for Energy has hosted a round table on the prospects of shale gas reserves development on March 25, 2010. Yuri Lipatov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee for Energy, Valery Yazev, deputy Chairman of the State Duma, as well as the representatives of the industrial ministries of Russia and the leading scientific institutes have taken part in the round table
As Lipatov stressed, "The aim of this round table is to hear the opinion of the Russian scientists and experts of the industry".

Curerently, shale gas is produced only in the USA and Canada. The share of shale gas in the total volume of gas production in the USA in 2009 was 11.36%. In 10-15 years, development of oil and gas industry might lead to a derease in shale gas imports to the main consumers (Europe, Chine, USA) and suspend or cancel a range of large projects for construction of LNG plants and regazification terminals, transcontinental gas pipelines, and change the gas prices on the world market.

The participants concluded the round table with a few recommendations for the Government of Russia: to appraise the shale has potential of Russia, study the leading production technologies and appraise the possible influence of the development of shale industry on the current and prospective export supplies of gas from Russia.
