国际委员会关于核不扩散和裁军委员会第三届会议于6月22-23日在莫斯科召开, Energoatom Concern

Release Date: 2009-06-22

The topics of the meeting will be nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful use of nuclear energy. Presently, the Commission is focused on drafting recommendations for the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

On June 19 2009 Director General of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation Sergey Kiriyenko met with co-chairs of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament Gareth Evans (Australia) and Yoriko Kawaguchi (Japan) in Moscow.

The key component of the non-proliferation regime is the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency and Russia gives top priority to the development and universalization of these guarantees.

Kiriyenko pointed out a number of projects implemented by Russia to ensure gradual nuclear disarmament, wherein Rosatom plays a key role: HEU-LEU Agreement with the Untied States (over 350 tons of highly enriched uranium out of planned 500 tons have been processed so far, which is equivalent to 16,000 nuclear bombs); Plutonium Disposition Agreement; the International Uranium Enrichment Center in Angarsk as part of the Russian President’s initiative to create a global nuclear fuel cycle infrastructure; participation in the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO); the Agreement with the United States on Russian Plutonium Reactor Shutdowns.

Following the initiative of IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, Russia has suggested creating own stock of low enriched uranium for ensuring stable supplies of nuclear fuel to IAEA-member states.
