Russian Railways and the railways of Austria, Slovakia and Ukraine sign a resolution of the Organization Committee of the project for extension of a broad-gauge railway about the launch of a joint venture for finishing the feasibility study of the project’s investments.
In the framework of the Fourth International Business Forum “Strategic partnership 1520”, a resolution was signed by Vladimir Yakunin, President of Russian Railways, Mikhail Kostyuk, General Director of State Academy of Railway Transport (GAZhD) of Ukraine, Gustav Poschalko, Member of the Board of Austrian Railways (OBB Holding AG) and Stefan Glinka, Director of State company Railways of Slovakia, about the launch of a joint venture for finishing the feasibility study of the project’s investments on May 28, 2009 in Sochi.

Objective of the project is to connect Central European railways with the regions of Trans-Siberian railway, attract cargo flow to the Asia-Russia-Central Europe route and increase the competitiveness of railway transport as compared to sea or motor transport. The project envisages extension of the broad-gauge railway from Košice (Slovakia) to Vienna (Austria).

Prior to that, Russian Railways, Austrian Railways, Railways of Slovakia and Railways of Ukraine signed a Memorandum on the start of a pre-project research stage for extension of the broad-gauge railway to Central Europe on April 4, 2008 in Vienna. Parties agreed on studying the technical and financial prospects of improving and upgrading the existing infrastructure and constructing new narrow-gauge and broad-gauge railway lines.
