Moscow, December 14, MPEI: MPEI, the oldest Russian institutes specialized in electric and thermal energy, energy machine building and IT since 1930, is approaching a landmark event - opening of a nanotech centre. A press conference at MPEI on December 14 featuring S.Serebryannikov, Rector of MPEI, Andrey Svinarenko, deputy General Director of Rusnano, Gennady Degtev, Head of the Tender Committee of the Moscow City Government and Head of MPEI’s Graduates Club, Vasily Zhurakovsky, Head of the Analytics Centre of the National HR Foundation, reviewed the different aspects of the interaction between business and education.
MPEI bears the proud status of the major Russian and European university in energy, with 9 institutes, 3 training centres and 70 departments and over 15,000 students from 60 countries. Over the last 80 years, about 190,000 people have graduated from MPEI that does not cease to prove its excellence in Russian and global energy education, with 7,000 foreign graduates. MPEI’s graduates have developed the famous GOELRO plan, have been gearing the energy reforms in the Soviet Union, have developed new solutions for improvement of power generation equipment and have been throughout many years been among the leaders of the Russian energy system.

In 2008, MPEI initiated an innovative education program acquiring the status of a National Research University (NIU). Some of the key education-oriented innovations implemented in MPEI are, according to Sergey Serebryannikov, installation of multimedia equipment, Wi-Fi networks available in all MPEI buildings, remote education programs, the “Synergy” project uniting the education resources of 5 technical universities from Europe and Asia, an online server for network-based engineering analysis implemented in 2005, and a unique Thermal Power Plant (TEZ), connected to Moscow’s energy generation system, built to train MPEI students.

Some of the latest innovations at MPEI is a Nanotech Centre developed jointly with Rusnano. As Andrey Svinarenko, deputy General Director of Rusnano, explained, Rusnano is involved in education projects developed with MPEI and, as the state agent between the science and the business, executes financial support for industrial projects in Russia. Rusnano’s key activities in this area comprise financing the new Nanotech science and education centre at MPEI, co-developing Rusnano-oriented education programs and training MPEI’s professors for further popularization of nanotechnologies. As a matter of fact, this is a response coming from the industry and the education: over the last 20 years, the Russian universities have considerably lost the creative potential in developing technologies. Such projects have proved to be a successful solution to re-equip the laboratories and scientific centres in Russia and create conditions to develop technological projects with a commercial potential where MPEI officially holds the right of intellectual property. MPEI’s nanotech centre has unique equipment in Russia and Europe for research of nanocharacteristics and development of nanocomposite technologies some of which have been demonstrated by MPEI professors at the press-conference. According to Svinarenko, about 50 universities in Russia have announced development of nanotech programs.

According to Vasily Zhurakovsky, Head of the Analytics Centre of the National HR Foundation, MPEI’s programs are outstanding for taking a new level of research as one of the national leaders in education and a remarkable global player in energy education. Its contribution is invaluable to increase the efficiency of energy and form education standards of a federal scope. Moreover, one of the priority national projects in Russia is to support National Research Universities.

MPEI also announced plans to cooperate with Skolkovo Innovations Centre.
