Russia and Turkey sign joint announcement of cooperation in nuclear construction, Rosatom

The announcement was signed on January 13 by Igor Sechin, deputy Chairman of the Government of Russia, and Taner Yildiz, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, after the talks between the Prime Ministers of Russia and Turkey. This step envisages creation of a working group that will develop technical, economic and legal aspects of the project
According to an announcement by Vladimir Putin at the press conference after the talks with Tayyip Erdogan, his Turkish counterpart, "We're convinced that Russia has serious competitive advantages for construction of nuclear plants in Turkey".

As Putin said, Russia can offer more competitive prices for nuclear construction, and is hoping to hear a positive answer.

The pilot nuclear plant in Turkey is planned to be constructed at the Akkuyu site near Mersin, a Turkish port on the Mediterranean sea. Another nuclear site in Turkey is planned to be constructed in Sinop. In total, Turkey plans to construct three nuclear sites by 2013.

Currently, 50% of Turkey's needs in power is covered by gas plants; coal-powered and hydropower plants each account for 25%.
