Energy efficiency on top of the agenda of Energy Minister’s visit to Germany, Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation

Sergey Shmatko, Minister of Energy of Russia, is visiting Germany on July 15-16, 2009. His visit includes his participation in a few events related to development of Russian-German cooperation in energy efficiency and negotiations with Sigmar Gabriel, Minister of the Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety, and Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, Minister of Economy and Science of Germany.
Agenda of the negotiations includes discussion of the prospects of Russian-German energy cooperation and expansion of their interaction in the sphere of energy.

Оne of the priorities of the cooperation is to use to potential of both countries in energy saving, increasing energy efficiency and using renewables.

In the framework of agreements between Russia and Germany that were reached in 2008, Russian-German Agency for Energy Efficiency is being created.
An agreement on interaction between the Ministry of Energy of Russia, Government of Sverdlovsk region, administration of Yekaterinburg and Siemens was signed on February 2, 2009 for research and implementation of energy saving technologies in Yekaterinburg. This project also envisages development of energy efficient city project.

Germany is the largest importer of Russian gas. Total volume of exports of Russian natural gas to Germany reached 32.9 billion cu. m of gas in 2008 and 11.9 billion cu. m in 1H 2009. The main German partners of Russia are E.ON Ruhrgas AG and Wintershall AG.
