Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Yugra

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug (historical name Ugra) was founded on December, 10, 1930, by Decree of the All-Russia Central Executive Committee as Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug with the center in the settlement of Samarovo.

6 Districts as follows formed the Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug: Beryezovsky, Kondinsky, Laryaksky, Samarovsky, Surgutsky, Shurykshkarsky. On January, 17, 1934, the Okrug was joined to the structure of Ob-Irtysh Region; on December 7, 1934 - to the Omsk Region. On July, 4, 1937, Shuryshkarsky District was transferred to the Yamalo-Nenetsky National Okrug. By Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR, dated October 23, 1940, Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug was renamed into the Khanty-Mansiysky National Okrug. On August 14, 1944, it joined to the reorganized Tyumen region.

Khanty-Mansiysky National Okrug was awarded Lenin's Order (December, 10, 1970) and Order of Friendship (December, 29, 1972).

According to the Constitution of the USSR, adopted on October 7, 1977, Khanty-Mansiysk National Okrug gained the status of the Autonomous Okrug and was called Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug.

According to the Constitution of the Russian Federation of 1993 the Okrug is an equal in rights entity of the Russian Federation

By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation # 841 dated July 25, 2003, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug was renamed into the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug is a part of the Ural Federal District.
