Yamal-Europe gas pipeline

The transnational Yamal-Europe gas pipeline runs across four countries: Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany, with 14 operating compressor stations. Total length of the pipeline exceeds 2,000 km. Its construction began in 1994, with the irst sections of the pipeline brought online in 1996.

The German end of the project was overseen by WINGAS, a joint venture between Gazprom and Wintershall. Russian gas arrives at the Malnow compressor station in the vicinity of the German-Polish border; the Polish section of the pipe was built by EuRoPol GAZ, a joint venture of Gazprom and the Polish PGNiG.

Construction on Yamal-Europe’s Belarusian part started in 1997 with Gazprom as the sole investor. There are five compressor stations up and running – Nesvizhskaya, Krupskaya, Slonimskaya, Minskaya and Orshanskaya; with commissioning of the latter in 2006, Yamal-Europe reached its full capacity – 33 bcm.

In 2007 the pipeline exported over 31 bcm of gas. Over eight years of operation (from November 1999 to October 2007) Yamal-Europe supplied foreign consumers with around 180 bcm of gas.
