Administration of Astrakhan Region
Astrakhan region is a federal subject of the Russian Federation with administrative center in the city of Astrakhan. With a territory of 44.100 sq. km. and a population of 1.007.200 people (2002 census), the region is Russia's gateway to the Caucasus and Iran, via the Caspian Sea. The region is known for its rich hydrocarbon resources, such as oil, gas and gas condensate, which are located on the territory of the Astrakhan Region and the contiguous shelf of the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea. Astrakhan gas condensate fields are one of the biggest in Russia and have unique composition. The growing role of the Astrakhan Region is related to the importance of the Caspian area and its oil and gas reserves. Estimated reserves of the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea can be compared with those of Azerbaijani sector and expertly estimated as 1 billion tones of oil and 1 trillion cubic meters of gas.Governor of the Astrakhan Region is Zhilkin Alexander.
